The interface is quirky, the lack of an undo (the checkpoint functionality merely saves the file) is annoying and generally the whole app feels clunky the UI could easily be a lot more streamlined to look like a Windows app and more easy on the eye. The ability to view and alter the weightings and paint the masks / areas of each image that make up the tonal range of he final image. The ability to toggle on/off the images that make up the composite HDR image and see the effect immediately. I've played around with version 2 standard edition (free with a magazine) and see that it has some awesome features: Franzis HDR also leaves lots of noise in the dark areas where ghosting was corrected, but no where near as bad as Photomatix and ACR.įrancis HDR really needs a UI overhaul and more complete documentation in English.
The others leave ghosting artifacts and halos. Photomatix comes close, but generates terrible noise. No other HDR program has been able to handle this set (Photomatix, SNS, ACR, NIK). I've got one 3 bracket set that has lots of ghosting in dark values of windblown trees. But a few tests of alignment and deghosting look very good. Why they turn it on by default is a mystery.įor me, the jury is still out on basic merge and tonemapping. Turn it off too and things start looking better. Plus, there is an "effect" option in the "Expert" panel called "Gradient tone mapping" that is set by default. Turn those off and things start looking much better. Specifically, their noise reduction and sharpening are bad (very bad). But then I discovered it is their default settings that generate bad results.

Why are they trying to dump the old version on the English market? Get some sales then offer a $$ upgrade? I can't find an upgrade policy anywhere. The English page at shows only version 3.
